Weligama's surf spots, from beginner to reef break

Weligama Bay is one of the most forgiving places to learn to surf in Sri Lanka. The bay is wide, the sandy bottom is safe to fall on, and the wave breaks slowly enough for a first-timer to actually stand up.

Weligama Bay — beginners

A long, soft, sandy-bottomed break that works on most swells. Mornings are calmer and less crowded than mid-afternoon, when surf schools fill the line-up. Good board rental and lesson operators are within walking distance of the bay itself.

Coconut Tree Hill & nearby reef breaks

Once you're comfortable, a short scooter ride east or west opens up faster, punchier reef breaks better suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. Reef means booties or at least caution — check conditions before paddling out.

Best time of year

The south coast season generally runs from November through April, with the most consistent swell in the middle of that window. Outside those months, conditions get inconsistent and many operators shift north to Arugam Bay.

Getting to the breaks

Most of what's listed here is walkable or a five-minute ride from Green Nest. We rent bikes by the day if you'd rather explore the breaks further out on your own schedule.
